Superstition has no place in the Occult or Magickal practices.
If a bird enters your house – it simply means that a bird entered your house because you left your doors or windows open.
If a black cat crossed your path – it simply means that a black cat crossed your path…because cats walk and move around like any other living creature and go where they please.
If your ears itch – it simply means that your ears itch…and that you should probably clean them.
Social media is filled with various posts and images about “if this happens then it means this” or “if that happens then so-and-so”. The vast majority of these “spiritual hints” are sheer nonsense and old wives’ tales…only given substance by people’s belief in them.
If you believe that an owl hooting outside your house at night is a bad omen, then it will be a bad omen…not because it actually is a bad omen…but because you believe it is a bad omen.
The power of belief is a tricky little thing and ties into perception – we’ve written about the influence of belief and perception so many times that it isn’t even funny anymore.
If you believe that a black cat is good luck, then it is good luck. If you believe that a black cat is bad luck, then it is bad luck. Not because it actually carries any symbolism or meaning by itself irrelevant of your belief or disbelief…no. Because you believe it to be either the one, or the other. We should know, we have many cats of all colors of the cat-rainbow…including multiple black cats.
Allow us to illustrate this to you…
There is a little “poem” that varies by regions pertaining to crows or magpies. There are many variations, so we will just share one:
“One for sorrow,
Two for mirth,
Three for a wedding,
Four for birth.”
…and so on.
So, according to this, if you see one crow (or magpie) it indicates that you will experience sorrow soon…if you see two, you will experience joy soon and so on.
If you believe in this whole-heartedly, then it will be so…not because crows or magpies for some reason exist to show up to you to predict events because you are oh-so-special to the universe…no. Because you believe in the symbolism presented.
Yet, if you do not believe or remain neutral, then no matter how many crows or magpies you see…nothing will happen at all.
And, if you are us, you like crows…so then, you change the poem to:
“One for mirth,
Two for mirth,
Three for mirth,
Four for mirth.”
…and so on. Then, believe that it is true - know that it is true. Then, every time you see a crow, mirth will follow.
Simple.
By the way, it is rather interesting that the meaning of the crows or magpies (and thus what they “predict”), depends wholly on the variant of this poem you believe in – if you believe the above variant, then 3 crows means that there will be a wedding soon…yet, in another variant, then 3 crows symbolize the birth of a girl. Once again proving that crows and magpies mean nothing by themselves…yet, may mean something according to your beliefs.
We suppose its all good and well if people want to believe in superstitious things…but if you practice Magick or the Occult Arts, then you have no excuse to behave like a 16th-century peasant with too much time on their hands and too much vacant space in their minds.
Why?
Because you should know better…you study Magick after all.
