The Law of Correspondence

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

We have recently been inspired to write about the topic of the Seven Hermetic Laws – and more specifically, about the Law of Correspondence. Although many practitioners may at least know about these Hermetic Laws, not a lot of people truly understand the extent or importance of these Laws. Hence this modest piece, through which we hope to show even those people who do not actively practice any form of magick, how easy it is to utilize these Laws to not just influence your life for the better, but also to refrain from falling into common pitfalls in life (and magick), which cause inertia and stagnation.

Please note that these Laws deserve an entire book to be explained properly – yet, this will only deal with one of these Laws, and only in a manner to explain it simply, enough to be able to utilize it.

Now, the best place to start is at the beginning: what are the Seven Hermetic Laws? The Seven Hermetic Laws (simply put) are seven principles that life and existence fall under. These Laws have been neatly outlined by Hermes Trismegistus, the father of Hermeticism – however, whether Hermes Trismegistus (or rather “Hermes the Thrice-Born”) was indeed a single person, whether he existed at all, or whether the name is but a moniker to many various people in ancient history remains debatable. Although the existence of Hermes Trismegistus may be a bit vague, the writings attributed to him is not vague in the least, and comprises the base of Hermeticism. All that can be said for sure, is that the Seven Hermetic Laws shared in the Corpus Hermetic have been found in part in the Nag Hammadhi library in 4th century Egypt A.D., and even in the Emerald Tablets of Thoth — proving a common thread of some sort.

Now, we will not delve into that, as that is a very complex subject – so let us return to the Laws itself. For us personally to acknowledge any form of “Universal Law” is quite unusual, as we do not agree with many of the “accepted laws of magick”, such as the alleged “three-fold law of return”. What, then, makes the Seven Hermetic Laws so important and viable then, at least to us? As you may or may not know, we personally do not believe everything we read, no matter who or what it has been attributed to – yet these Laws have proven themselves to not simply be some “observations” or “opinions” – but can rather be called true Universal Laws…note the capitalization. The Universe have many laws we suppose that we may or may not know of – yet the Seven Hermetic Laws are indeed very true and very real…they exist and apply to everything whether you will it to be so or not…and this further adds to its importance.

The Seven Hermetic Laws in their totality are:

1. The Law of Mentalism –

“The All is mind; the Universe is Mental.”

2. The Law of Correspondence –

“As above, so below; as below, so above. As within, so without; as without, so within.”

3. The Law of Vibration –

“Nothing rests; Everything moves; Everything vibrates.”

4. The Law of Polarity –

“Everything is dual; Everything has poles; Everything has its pair of opposites; Like and unlike are the same; Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; Extremes meet; All truths, are but half-truths; All paradoxes may be reconciled.”

5. The Law of Rhythm –

“Everything flows, out and in; Everything has its tides; All things rise and fall; The pendulum swing manifests in everything; The measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; Rhythm compensates.”

6. The Law of Cause and Effect –

“Every cause has its effect; Every effect has its cause; Everything happens according to law. Chance is but a name for law not recognized. There are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.”

7. The Law of Gender –

“Gender is in everything; Everything has its masculine and feminine principles; Gender manifests on all planes.”

Now, however, we will only speak of the Law of Correspondence. We are sure that almost everyone has heard that iconic statement of “as above, so below; as within, so without” – yet, do you know what this means…how significant this is? Allow us to attempt to touch on the vastness of this, using the part of “as within, so without”.

Some of you may have noticed how often we use the term “negativity begets negativity”. This is due to the Law of Correspondence. This means that if you are negative – stressed, worried, depressed etc – then you will draw forth more negativity into your life. Balance in its most basic understanding of the word does not exist in and of itself – so if you are negative, then positive things will not happen to you or be attracted to you. We liken this effect to a magnet. If you are perpetually negative, you will (like a magnet) draw more negativity unto you and your life. Likewise, positivity begets positivity. This can be applied to everything – wealth begets wealth, poverty begets poverty, joy begets joy, hate begets hate, illness begets illness, need begets need, fulfillment begets fulfillment – ad infinitum.

So, to simplify this even further: whatever you surround yourself with, whether “good” or “bad”, you will draw unto yourself. Whatever you fill your mind with, whether “good” or “bad”, you will draw unto yourself. Hence Crossed Conditions, hence spellwork “failing” etc etc. Simpler than this, we cannot possibly make this. If you constantly worry about getting that new job you’ve applied for – you will not get it. If you constantly think that something will be a failure – it will be a failure. This ties in deeply to perception and how you create your own reality.

Do you see how important this is, and how easily you can utilize this in your life? We’re not saying that you should delude yourself by being perpetually happy, no – but work on your perception, work on what you want – and it will manifest itself. What do you have to lose after all? Go ahead and try it…
